With the advanced complexity of the modern automobile engine, most shops/ garages use scanning tools to diagnose problems, and carry through with repairs.
The second version of the on-board diagnostic system (OBDII) is standard equipment in all vehicles made in the U.S. since 1996. Vehicles come with an "engine management computer." so that a mechanic can scan and download data concerning an engine's fuel supply, electronics, or air filters - a general broad survey or the engine performance. The scan can tell if a problem is actually in the engine, or if there's a glitch in the computer system .
When the computer perceives a problem, it activates the vehicle's "check engine" light, and the driver is alerted. The light indicates a problem that could affect your fuel economy, or exhaust system. You can't reset the check engine light, but it will go off automatically it the problem doesn't show up a second time. Give the computer a couple of das tor re-testing, and then, it the lIght is still on, get the vehicle checked out before things get worse.
The computer also keeps what is called the "correspondent diagnostic trouble code" (DTC) in its memory bank. Some detected problems will induce a "freeze frame" of the area of the engine where the problem has been spotted, just at the moment it was found. A mechanic can retrieve all of this information using his scanner, and match up the code in a service manual that he will have on hand, which describes what the various codes mean, and tells the mechanic what parts to test, and where to look to get to the root of the problem, and make repairs.
The technology of automotive diagnostics testing can be hard for the average owner to comprehend, but a professional facility can service a vehicle with know-how, and efficiency.

"OMG! After returning from a recent business trio to Tampa. Florida. discovered a dead battery in my 2014 Ford F-150. It was only 5-days since I last drove it! With my limited troubleshooting skills, I figured it had to be a bad battery or the fact I was driving a Ford. Either way, I knew the solution was to visit Steve and Tim at HotShots. Pro Tip 1 - if you have a battery manufactured in Korea, it's questionable how long it will last in our Colorado environment. It may last a year or 2, it may last 5 days. Good luck. Steve tested my battery and determined it wasn't the fact that I was driving a Ford. Whew. (Dodged a costly bullet there.) Using cutting edge, state-of-the-art technology, Steve hooked up this alien-looking handheld device to my Korean battery (unproudly installed by CarMax) and started pressing buttons in a specific sequence as if he were launching ICBM's back toward Korea. Next thing you know, a single piece of paper spit out - you need a new battery dude. Sure, I could have probably used a defibrillator and got back on the road. The reality though, when will this happen again and where will I get stranded next time? DIA? My driveway? Starbucks? Casa Bonita? In conclusion, Steve (and Tim) shoot straight with you and provide automotive facts to repair your vehicle. They have all the iPads, software, handheld devices with 10-foot cords to diagnose which seat was last farted in. Seriously. Ha. Thanks HotShots!" -- Kirk M
